TREACYS TAKE SENIOR CROWN

SEAN TREACYS 2-11 ULSTER 1-06

Treacys avenged their defeat in last years decider with a blistering second half performance to which a favored Ulster had no answers. The seasons biggest crowd by far flocked to Treasure Island to see these great rivals battle it out for the fourth successive year with both stands awash with Red and Black and Gold. The atmosphere was decidedly more upbeat in the Ulster section throughout the first half as they dominated Treacys and jumped into a 04 - 01 lead. However an incisive Treacys attack brought about a Conor Devanney goal and Treacys looked to have settled down. The Ulster response was immediate though as they carved open the Treacys defence for a superbly taken goal from the kickout. At half time Ulster led 1-04 to 1-02 and but for some wasteful shooting and a missed goal chance might have had the game by the neck.
The introduction of Steve Barron before the half at midfield for Treacys along with the aerial dominance of Denis Corcoran was to be the rock upon which Ulster perished. Corcorans second half display made him the stand-out player on show and together with Barron they ran the game from midfield for the second 30 mins. Liam "willie" Faherty's place kicking was instrumental in edging Treacys in front and When Kieran Bergin pointed a 45 to send Treacys 3 clear the writng was on the wall. Charlo Conneally was rediscovering his early season form and an incisive run set up Diarmuid Foley for a well taken goal, which sent the Treacys fans into orbit.
From here it was a case of taking no chances to the finish. Much had been written about this team in recent weeks, a lot of it unsavoury, however on this day they did all they needed to and more to deliver a second Senior title. Ulster will be disappointed but they once again contributed to another great sporting occasion for which these 2 clubs can be proud. Referee Bertie Penney did a fine job calling a tight game and maintaining excellent control.

DIVISION 2 FINAL

ULSTER 1-08 SEAN TREACYS 0-10

The curtain raiser in the TREACYS/ULSTER doubleheader provided another fine hour of entertainment as Ulster held on to win by the slimmest of margins. It was the proverbial game of 2 halves with Ulster going in at half-time 4 pts up and but for some sharp goalkeeping by Treacys netminder John McGinley, who had a fine game, the story could have been even grimmer. However in the second half Treacys chipped away at the lead and late in the game had 3 chances on goal only to be denied by good goalkeeping and errant shooting. In the end Ulster were able to hold on for the win with Treacys left to rue missed opprtunities.

JUNIOR B FINAL

CELTS 1-09 ULSTER 0-11

In the opening game of the day the Eanna Murphy led Celts team pipped Ulster by a point in an exciting open game. The Mayoman gave a virtuoso performance landing 1-07 of his sides total over the hour in a man of the match performance. Ulsters Sean O'Neill was their best player over the hour but this win will be a big boost to the ever improving Celts set-up.

LADIES JUNIOR FINAL

CLAN NA nGAEL 3-06 FOG CITY HARPS 2-08

Ecstatic scenes greeted Clans extra time win over Fog City as they wiped the slate clean on several barren seasons. It was a highly exciting tussle with Clan being slightly stronger over the course of the game but never being able to shake a resilient Fog City. In the end a point separated the sides and Clan had booked their Chicago spot. Credit to coaches Aidan Foley and Steve Barron who have put in a big effort to turn this team around.

WEEK 3 ROUNDUP

SENIOR FOOTBALL

SEAN TREACYS 3-10 BORUS 1-08
The scoreline didn't reflect fairly on Boru who clawed back a 5 point defecit after the half despite having Brian Reilly sent off for a second yellow. Having tied it up an upset looked on the cards but Treacys led by Steve Barron pulled away with a flurry of late scores.

ULSTER 0-15 CELTS 2-09
A late goal where keeper Benny Higgins was deemed to have caught the ball behind the line snatched a draw for Celts which was no more than they deserved. Indeed only for Higgins making some smart stops in the first half the story might have been different for Celts who led by a point at the half having dominated the game. A superb goal from Aidan O'Flynn was the highlight of the game. Ulster led by Greg Loughran pulled clear in the second half only to see their lead dissapear in some controversy.

SENIOR HURLING
Naomh Padraig 3-11 Na Fianna 1-08
NP took a 2 game lead in the best of 5 series in Senior Hurling. A win for Na Fianna in the rubber game on Sat July 24 is a must if last years Champions are to stay alive. Naomh Padraig look to have a little more firepower in the forward dept and will be favorites to take the title.

LADIES SENIOR FOOTBALL
FOG CITY HARPS 2-12 SAOIRSE 0-02
Fog City clinched the Senior Ladies title with a win over a brave Saoirse side in the 3rd game of the series. Saoirses predominantly home-grown talent will serve them well in years to come as they are still a little way off this level...all credit to them for giving it a go this year. Fog City now move on to defend their North American title in Chicago.

LADIES JUNIOR FOOTBALL
CLAN NA GAEL 1-06 SAOIRSE 1-05
Clan bridged a long gap in recording their first win in some time, amid jubilant scenes from players and fans alike.

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK 2 ROUND UP

In mens Div 1 football the day belonged to the Celts who had 13pts to spare over Boru in a ruthless display. Ahead by 0-06 to 0-04 they turned on the heat in the second half and took Boru apart with a pacy passing game, running out easy winners 2-14 to 0-07.
The other game failed to live up to the expectations we had, following a great Patricks Cup final between the two old rivals, with Ulster grinding out a hard fought 0-10 to 0-07 win over Treacys. Missed chances were the order of the day with both sides guilty of wasteful shooting particularly in the second half. The final score was probably a fair reflection on how the game transpired. Both sides would be hoping for better performances next time out.
In the Mens'Junior Competition there were wins for Ulster, Cusacks and Young Irelands.
In senior hurling Naomh Padraig overcame Na Fianna 5-14 to 3-10, this encounter was tight at the half but Steve Barrons retirement on a second yellow shortly after the half was a key factor in deciding the outcome of this one.
Naomh Padraig beat the Rovers in Junior Hurling.
In the Ladies Senior Fog City won over Saoirse scoring 3-19 but worryingly conceding 6 goals through their own end.
Fog also came through the Junior against Saoirse.

NEW PLAYING RULES IN EFFECT FOR MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

Summary of Playing Rule Changes 2010

The GAA Congress 2010 passed a number of playing rule changes relevant to football and hurling which will come into effect in all games played on or after May 15th 2010. In total there are six changes specific to football only and three specific to hurling, while a further six changes affect both codes, A summary of the changes is as follows:

Football Only:

1. Handpass – If a player handpasses the ball using the open hand, there must be a definite underhand striking action.

2. Penalty Kicks – All penalty kicks will now be taken from 11 metres out

3. Kick Outs – All kick outs will now be from the 13 metre line

4. Sideline kicks – Line balls must be kicked from outside the boundary line

5. Illegal Charge - It is illegal for a charge to be made on a player kicking the ball.

6. Definition of bounce - The redefinition of the bounce has the effect that the “Basketball Type”, bounce, per se, is not a foul.

Hurling only:

1. Puck Outs - The penalty for taking a puck-out from outside the small rectangle is changed from the award of a 65m free to the opposition to a throw in the ball on the defenders’ 20m line.

2. Handpass - The ball must be released and struck with a definite striking action of the hand

3. Penalties - Both attackers and defenders must remain outside the 20m line and the arc until the ball is struck from a penalty and the three defenders on the line must not move off the line until the ball is struck.

Both Hurling and Football:

1. Restarting Play – If play is stopped by the referee to enable a seriously injured player to be treated, play will now resume with a free to the team that had possession. However it will not be permitted to score from such a free (if neither team is “in possession”, play shall re-start with a throw in)

2. Throw ins – when the play is being restarted by a throw-in, this must take place a minimum of 13 metres from the sideline

3. Advantage – A referee will now signal that advantage is being played by raising his arm

4. Extra Time – Extra time consists of 10 minutes per half only. The provision for two additional periods of 5 minutes per half has been removed

5. Boundary Lines – The penalty for a player deliberately going outside the boundary lines of the pitch to gain an advantage has changed from a caution to a free.

6. Charge – A charge is now defined as “shoulder to shoulder” rather than “side to side”

NA FIANNA AND FOG CITY TAKE TITLES.

Fog City Harps 2-11 Saoirse 1-04

Fog City claimed the ladies final in emphatic fashion with a win over a spirited Saoirse side at Pairc na nGael on Sunday. Siobhan Dolan was the matchwinner for Fog City bagging 2 goals and a point. Anna Moore(0-3) and Sarah Finnerty(0-2) also had good outings for Fog.
For Saoirse Donna Ryan, Paula Byrne and Tracy lynch tried hard.

Na Fianna 1-13 Naomh Padraig 2-06

Steve Barron was the star of the show as Na Fianna outfoxed Naomh Padraig in the Senior Hurling Final. The Clashmore man dominated the hour in a comfortable win for the men in black and amber.

TREACYS CLAIM FOOTBALL FINAL IN THRILLER

SEAN TREACYS 1-08 ULSTER 0-09

The width of the crossbar was all that stood between Ulster and a last gasp St Patrick's Cup victory in a pulsating game played in front of a fine crowd at Treasure Island on Sunday. The game was played at a frantic pace from the beginning with Treacys cancelling out Ulsters first point and then adding a well taken goal from Dermot Foley who was causing Ulsters defence problems anytime he gained possesion. Ulster goalie Benny Higgins who had a fine 60 mins in goal displayed the reflexes of a cat when denying Liam 'willie" Faherty when a goal seemed certain. Howie Hughes was then called into action in the Treacys goal to deny Mick McCann from point blank range, the rebound was rifled off the crossbar and eventually put over for a point by Paraic Duffy who racked up several points over the hour for Ulster in a fine display. At the half the teams were tied at 1-02 - 0-05.
The second half was more of the same with some great tussles being played out all over the field. Treacys were edging the midfield battle with Pa "mental" Turnbull putting in his best showing in a Treacys shirt for some time. Steve Barron kicked a 50 yarder early in the second half and points from Faherty, Foley and Nick Dineen putting Treacys into a 2 point lead with time almost up. Wave after wave of Ulster attacks marshalled by Greg Loughran and Simon Maxwell were repelled by Paudie Allen, Steve Barron and Gus Smith, eventually almost 3 minutes into elapsed time Ulster shook the crossbar with what would surely have been the winner, and Treacys were relieved to hear Joe Corcoran's final whistle.
Over the hour Treacys had the advantage in the possesion game however Ulster were more economical and efficient in turning possesion into scores. For Ulster Mark Cunningham, Simon Maxwell, Greg Loughran and Paraic Duffy excelled. For Treacys Paudie Allen, Ciaran Bergin, Pa Turnbull (MVP), Steve Barron and Dermot Foley all played big roles.
Referee Joe Corcoran's handling of the game was assured and consistent and contributed hugely to an entertaining game.

Benefit for Darren McCauley

To All;

Please come and join us next Saturday 22nd May at Martin Mack's for a benefit night for Darren "Smackers" McCauley.

Darren McCauley came to San Francisco 6 years ago and has been a prominent member of the Ulster Club and Irish community every since. Darren broke his leg playing for Ulster several weeks ago and has not been able work since. Darren has also incurred significant medical expenses from his injury, any help and support would be greatly appreciated.

See you next Saturday @ 7.30pm for a good nights crack.

Ulster Club would like to thank you all in advance for all your generosity and support.

Kindest regards

Ulster Club Committee.

ST PATRICKS CUP FINALS LOOM

The finals of the St Patricks Cup will take place on the weekend of June 12th with several spots still up for grabs this week and next.

In the Men's Senior Football Sean Traecy's have secured a final spot, having progressed through the rounds unbeaten. The semi-final will see Boru meet Ulster, having overcome the men in gold by 7 points in the early round. Indeed an understrength Boru gave Treacys enough to think about in the Round Robin game before going under by 3 points in a tight and edgy battle, literally.

The Hurling Competition will take place between Na Fianna and Naomh Padraig, Padraigs have had the early edge however the landscape may have altered somewhat by the time the final comes round, and with many of the summer palyers starting to arrive, early results may have little bearing on this one. It was refreshing to see the young Rovers team compete for the first time on the back of their North American Junior C title win.

The Ladies football will have Fog City play either Saoirse or Clan na nGael, and one thinks the Fog ladies should have enough in reserve to win this one.

BORU AND TREACYS TAKE THE SPOILS

BORU 2-09 CELTS 1-11

It was another sunny Sunday on Treasure Island and the fans were treated to an entertaining afternoons' football in the Senior bracket.
In the first game Boru were victorious over Celts by a scoreline of 2-09 to 1-10. Celts again started well and were winning the midfield battle early on but as the half progressed Brian Reilly began to turn things in Borus favor, a couple of well finished goals from the impressive Sean Farr saw Boru go in at the half ahead by 2-04to 0-05. In the early part of the second half Celts were finding it difficult to advance the play past the Boru half backs who were dominating. However Eanna Murphy brought them back within range with a goal midway through, indeed one wonders had he been deployed further from goal on a struggling half forward line, instead of adrift of things in the corner, would Celts have got a little more from this. Willie Russell made a couple of smart stops in the goal for Boru as they held out for a deserved win. For Celts Ted Gunthren and Eanna Murphy were best. Borus were well served by Brian Reilly, Sean Farr and Bonnie Collins.

SEAN TREACYS 2-13 ULSTER 1-07

In the second game Sean Treacys overcame Ulster in another good game for the fans.Treacys started well moving into a 2pt lead but an Ulster goal put them ahead 1-01 to 02. Treacys were winning the lions share of possesion in midfield and with a forward line playing well as a unit they fought back and a goal from Dave Faherty along with 3 point from Mick Dinneen put them ahead at the break 1-09 to 1-02. The early part of the second half saw an Ulster revival of sorts and they pulled back Treacys lead to a manageable 4 points. However hopes of a win were dashed when Cathal Conneely won a ball against the odds in the backline and delivered to the impressive Ciaran Bergin. Bergin who had been lively all game gave a perfect ball to Liam Faherty who dispatched to the Ulster net. From here the game was out of reach for Ulster for whom Austy McKenna, Greg Loughran and the unfortunate Darren McCauley who exited with a broken leg, tried hard. For Treacys Cathal Conneely was the best on display, along with Steve Barron, Ciaran Bergin and Mick Dinneen all caught the eye.

In the opener, the Hurling bracket saw Naomh Padraig overcome the young SF Rovers side.
In the Junior Competition Shannon Rangers won out over the San Francisco minors.

ULSTER TAKE POLE POSITION

What a difference a week makes! Treasure Island was bathed in sunshine on Sunday and supporters were given reason to believe that this years Mens Football Championship will be one to look forward to. In the game of the day Ulster overcame Celts by a scoreline of 1-07 to 0-08 in a highly entertaining outing. Celts came out with all guns blazing and went into a 05-02 lead with Aidan O'Flynn driving the bus at midfield. Ulster clawed back and goaled just before half-time and Austy McKenna was their busiest player on display. At the half Ulster went in 1-05 to 0-05 ahead. With the aid of a slight breeze in the second half Celts outscored Ulster 3-2 but despite having the better of the possession could not get the goal they needed for a win which wouldn't have been undeserved. Both teams were well up for a physical battle which had passages of championship like football at times. For Ulster Austy Mckenna was in cracking form helped by Neil Donnelly and Mike English. Aidan O'Flynn had his best outing for Celts in quite some time, dominating the middle with some great fielding and smart distribution. He was again ably assisted by Pat Power and Ted Gunthren. Ulster take top position in the table with 2 wins while Celts will be feeling slightly frustrated to have lost 2 which could have just as easily went the other way.
In the days' other games Fog City were too strong for Clan na nGael in the ladies game which they won with a bit to spare.
In the opening game of the hurling SF Rovers gave Na Fianna a wake up call and led their more fancied opponents 1-06 to 1-03 at the half. Na Fianna were strongest in the run in though and won 3-11 to 2-06. Well done to the Rovers who continue to improve and will be looking to make a mark on this years North American Junior B Championship.

Ladies Football Allstar Report by Jackie Cahill

2008 Allstars 3-11
2009 Allstars 1-11

By Jackie Cahill at Pairc na nGael, Treasure Island....

MAYO ace Cora Staunton was the jewel of Treasure Island as the 2008 O’Neills/TG4 Ladies Football Allstars defeated their 2009 counterparts in San Francisco on Saturday.
Staunton bagged a sensational individual haul of 2-5 as the selection managed by Cork’s Eamon Ryan ran out winners by six points at the magnificent Pairc na nGael venue.
Staunton racked up her matchwinning tally before she was withdrawn with 18 minutes remaining and an attendance in the region of 1,000 people afforded the four-time All-Ireland senior medallist a rousing reception as she left the field of play.
The Carnacon attacker, who scored 2-2 from play, was the star of the show in an attacking sense but goalkeeper Elaine Harte was also in superb form and pulled off a succession of top class saves.
Another of Cork’s travelling contingent, Nollaig Cleary, also caught the eye with a hard-working display while Angela Walsh was a tower of strength at full-back for the winners.
For the 2009 Allstars, Cork’s Geraldine O’Flynn performed effectively in a defensive role before moving further up the field while Mayo’s Emma Mullin pulled the strings from centre forward.
The 2009 selection was managed by Deirdre Murphy, who masterminded Clare’s All-Ireland intermediate success last year, but she had to play second fiddle to Ryan’s team, who started with six of Cork’s senior champions.
Among them was Briege Corkery, who travelled from Australia just for this game, while O’Flynn was joined by Norita Kelly in the 2009 team.
Staunton showed her class with an early goal to set the 2008 winners on their way but the 2009 Allstars hit back with three unanswered points to tie the scores at 0-3 to 1-0 with nine minutes on the watch.
Staunton, who hit 2-3 in the first half alone, took over after that and an unanswered run of 1-3 from the 27-year-old, including a brilliant 14th minute goal, sent the 2008 Allstars into a 2-3 to 0-3 lead approaching half-time.
At the break, the 2009 Allstars trailed by 0-5 to 2-3 and their task was made even more difficult within a minute of the restart when Down ace Michaela Downey lashed home a fine goal off the underside of the crossbar.
But in an entertaining encounter, the 2009 Allstars fought back and were given a lifeline by Ciara McAnespie in the 38th minute when the Monaghan forward found the net.
With ten minutes remaining, the 2009 Allstars had reduced the deficit to just three points, trailing by 1-9 to 3-6, but the 2008 Allstars rallied with a run of four successive points to make the game safe.
At a post-match reception, Ladies Gaelic Football President Pat Quill thanked officials from San Francisco GAA and the Western Divisional board for their warm welcome to sun-kissed Treasure Island.
He also announced that a new Ladies Football club is being established in Los Angeles, on the back of the success of this tour.

Weather the winner as opening day all but washed out

The opening day of the St Patricks Cup was almost a complete washout as all but one game was cancelled due to heavy rain. The opening game saw Sean Treacy's defeat the Celts over an hour that did little to lift the spirits of the few hardy souls who braved the elements to watch. It was a dour affair with players struggling to handle in the brutal conditions and elementary mistakes that will leave both managements under no illusions that serious improvement is needed if either side is to make any championship impact. Celts had the upper hand in the first half and went into a 1-04 to 0-00 lead with Treacys then availing of an unfortunate mix-up between full-back and goalkeeper to register a fortuitous goal to leave the half-time score 1-04-1-00.
The second half saw a complete reversal of fortunes with the Celts registering a single point to Treacys 0-07, helped mainly by Dave Faherty finding his range from frees after missing a few early on. For the Celts Aidan O'Flynn, Pat Power and Sean Burke in goal did well while Treacys were best served by Cathal Conneely, Steve Barron and Dave Faherty. Darren McAuley and his team of Officials deserve a mention for enduring the brutal conditions.

O’Neills/TG4 All-Stars Set to Take California by storm
On the 31st March 2010 40 of the most talented Ladies Gaelic footballers will touch down in San Francisco for the third O’Neills/TG4 All Stars Tour.
This tour celebrates the sporting prowess of some of the finest female athletes Ireland has to offer and provides a unique experience for both players and supporters of the game in San Francisco to go along and see them train and play.
In the past, the O’Neills/TG4 All-Stars have travelled to New York (2004), Singapore (2006) and Dubai (2008).
The All-Stars will play an exhibition game and will also take a number of training sessions while on the west coast of America.
Among the stand out items on the itinerary is the appearance in Páirc na nGael, Treasure Island on Easter Saturday, April 3rd. A Ladies Football tournament consisting of local and visiting teams will also be held on Treasure Island to coincide with this event.
For those not familiar with the concept, the All Stars Tour celebrates the sporting achievements of these athletes during the previous two calendar years when their performances were acknowledged at an end of year awards ceremony. And after a magnificent few years for Ladies Gaelic Football in Ireland five-in-a-row senior winners Cork are well represented on the tour as are 2009 runners up Dublin and perennial contenders Mayo.
Pat Quill, the president of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association is certainly looking forward to the trip after a very positive year for the Association.
“The last few years have been truly memorable years for Ladies Football in Ireland culminating in 2009 when we had three classic finals in Croke Park with well over 25,000 people in attendance. Coupled with the fantastic coverage we receive from our sponsors TG4, Ladies Football is on the rise and we are delighted to spread the good word to the GAA community, and indeed non-GAA, folk of San Francisco.
The All-Stars tours bring the country’s best players to GAA heartlands overseas and the growth of Ladies football in places like Asia, Great Britain, Australia, Europe and of course North America has been one of the most important and memorable achievements of Ladies Football over the last three decades.
Echoing these sentiments was Ladies' Football Chief Executive, Helen O'Rourke who insisted that these players were critical to the success of the Association over the last few years and deserve the rewards and recognition of their male counterparts.
“2009 was certainly a great year for the Association and we are delighted to be presenting both the 2008 and 2009 All Star Teams to our loyal followers in San Francisco. The trip is a great way of recognising the sterling contribution that these stars make to the Association.
“These players are not found wanting either on the field of play or in the way they carry themselves off the pitch and illustrate the ethos of Ladies Football over the course of the season. Our All Stars are worthy of our admiration as sportswomen, as individuals and as ambassadors for Ladies Football. I am delighted we are going to San Francisco to help those in California who are enjoying and promoting the wonderful game of Ladies Football.
After a winter of unusually inclement weather in Ireland with floods followed by snow and ice, no doubt the touring party will be hoping for fine weather Stateside and will be hoping for an even warmer San Francisco welcome.
